Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Whether you’re new to therapy or have worked with a counselor before, you may have questions. These are the most common but if your question isn’t below, contact me. I’m here to help.

What if my spouse or partner does not want to participate?

Though your spouse’s participation is ideal, we still encourage you to participate in your counseling session even if it’s by yourself. Each person in a relationship has a role. What I’ve found is that, even when only one partner is in attendance, that person can learn new insights that help them strengthen the relationship.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes, I do. However, many insurance companies will not provide coverage for couple and relationship counseling services, so it’s important that you contact your insurance provider about your policy to confirm that the counseling services you desire are covered.

How many sessions will I need?

The duration and frequency of your treatment plan will depend on the current state your relationship or mental health, as well as the counseling approach that I recommend for your particular situation. Some couples participating in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), for instance, will see improvements after 10-15 sessions, while others require a few more, or a few less.

Where are you located? What are your appointment times? And how do I check your availability?

My office is located in Phoenix, Arizona, and I offer in-person services to all of the greater Phoenix area. I hold office hours Monday-Friday, with most of my appointments occurring between 10am and 6pm. I also offer teletherapy services To check my availability, please go to the contact page.

How long is a typical session?

Our sessions will last 45-55 minutes. For your first visit, plan to spend a little time filling out initial paperwork. Ideally, we will meet weekly, at least early on, after which we can move to a bi-weekly schedule depending on your specific needs.

Are our sessions secure and confidential?

I maintain strict confidentiality for all of my clients. If needed, and with your signed permission, I might work with your physician or other medical or mental health providers. One key exception is if I feel that a client is a danger to themselves or others, I am required by law to contact authorities. All rules, regulations, and guidelines around confidentiality will be provided to you at your initial visit.

Do I need counseling?

The best way to find out is to start the conversation. Book me for a free 15-minute consultation to see where you’re at and get an idea if counseling is right for you. What I find is that many people benefit from some form of therapy even if they aren’t facing an urgent breakdown or crisis.

What do I need to do before my first session?

Once I have scheduled your appointment, I’ll send you all of the details to your email. This will include any required paperwork that you need to complete before your first appointment. I will walk you through all policies, procedures, and required forms when we meet for the first time, and of course answer any questions you might have. In addition, I ask that you bring your insurance card with you to your session, or have it handy if we’ve scheduled a teletherapy appointment.

Can you prescribe medication?

No. However, I can refer you to a psychiatrist as needed, or work with your existing psychiatrist (with your written consent) to determine the need for any pharmaceutical interventions.
